German Chocolate Cake Caramel Bars

I am organizing my mom's recipe collections for her---you know, all the files full of magazine clippings, computer print outs, hand written recipes from friends and personal notes--- and putting them into plastic sleeves in binders organized by type of recipe. I found this recipe on an old recipe card from "Mom K" which was from my grandma. I was able to find it many places on the internet, so clearly is not a family secret recipe, but one that is definitely worth a try. It is a very sweet, chocolatey, gooey dessert that was a hit with my teen age daughters and their friends when they had a movie night at our house.

German Chocolate Cake Caramel Bars

1 box German Chocolate Cake mix
3/4 cup butter, melted
2/3 cup evaporated milk, divided
50 caramels (have the kids unwrap the caramels for you!)
1 cup chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350. Melt caramels with 1/3 cup evaporated milk over low heat, stirring until smooth. Put cake mix in bowl, add melted butter and 1/3 cup evaporated milk and mix. Press half of cake mixture into greased 9 x 13" pan. Bake at 350 for 6 minutes.
Remove from oven, sprinkle with chocolate chips and top with melted caramel. Place spoonfuls of remaining cake mixture over top of cake. Bake for 18 minutes and let cook in pan until cutting (or you will have a gooey mess) Enjoy with an ice cold glass of milk!
